Robert Ryman, American, born 1930
Untitled, 1965
Oil on linen, 10 1/8 x 10 1/8", Signed and dated on verso
"In 1965 Ryman completed a series of small square linen canvases that were later exhibited at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Musuem, New York, in 1972. In this work, Ryman applied the white enamel paint in thin layers, so that the brushstrokes are indiscernable within the centre of the painting; the smooth surface contrasts with the sliver of brown, textured linen visible at the outermost edges." -Minimalism James Meyer, p. 126.
