Beckman graduated from the Bauhaus Dessau in 1932. His primary instructors were Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee. He then went into exile in Prague before coming to the United States with the help of Hilla Rebay in 1949. He exhibited in MOMA's groundbreaking Responsive Eye Exhibition in 1965. The first museum show to survey optical art. A 350 page monograph was recently published on the artist and is available through our gallery.
